Spotlight on international partnerships

One planet, one shared future: this is what guides the EU’s engagement with partners across the globe. Through its international partnerships, the EU works to address our common challenges to achieve a better future for everyone.

The EU’s action is shaped by the principle of the ‘Five Ps’: people, planet, prosperity, peace and partnership. Guided by these principles, the EU supports initiatives that aim to boost living standards, tackle shared issues such as climate change, and achieve sustainable economic growth around the world. These actions seek to build fair, inclusive and peaceful societies for all.

The European Commission plays an important role in forming and maintaining the EU’s international partnerships. This work is supported by the EU’s network of over 140 delegations and offices. Representing the EU and its citizens in every continent across the globe, these structures play a vital role in building networks. Through their work, they increase the visibility, awareness and understanding of the EU and its actions.

To strengthen collaboration with regional bodies, partnerships have been forged with the African Union, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations for example. The EU works with these organisations on an array of policies, from peace and security to climate and the environment.

The EU is a strong advocate for a multilateral approach, founded on universal rules and values, to addressing global challenges. It works closely with international organisations like the United Nations. As an observer member with enhanced status at the UN General Assembly, the EU joins in debates, submits proposals, takes part in negotiations and participates in the general assembly each September.

Our December newsletter puts the spotlight on the EU’s international partnerships.
